As of October 12, the base fare in Seoul taxis is now 3,000 won, a 600 won increase from the previous base taxi fare. The price increase is the first one in four years, a result of the gradual increase in oil and gas prices as well as the cost for the improvement and management of passenger services in the taxi industry. There is expected to be some confusion for customers over the next month as Seoul Metropolitan Government works to update approximately 72 thousand taxi meters to the new base fare. For customers who enter a cab with a basic fare of 2,400 won, they can expect to pay an extra 600 won at the end of the ride. Gyeonggi-do will apply the raised taxi fare starting October 19.
