The Korean government has announced that from the second half of 2014 onwards, the substitute holiday system will apply to Seollal (Lunar New Year’s Day), Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving Day) and Children’s Day. Under this system, when national holidays such as Seollal, Chuseok, or Children’s Day fall on a weekend or another holiday, the government will designate the following working day as a non-working day. The first substitute holiday will apply to the Chuseok (Sep. 7 to 9) holiday in 2014. Because the first day of the three-day Chuseok holiday falls on Sunday (Sep. 7), workers get the following business day (Wed, Sep. 10) after the holiday as an extra day off. Those visiting Korea next year should take this new system into consideration when planning their trip.
